In these drawings I use my breath as a guide to making marks. I have been influenced by meditative practices and am always looking at ways to incorporate these into areas of my life including my art. Each line is drawn to the length of an inhale or exhale. No emphasis is given on keeping the line straight thus giving each line its own character and imperfections. I aim to slow down by focusing on my breath and hope the result gives the viewer a meditative effect in return.

The repetition in this series invites contemplation of time and the trace of action. The past and future only exist as memory or anticipation in the mind. These paintings aim to connect to the now and be in touch with the simplicity and beauty of the ordinary. The colour blue represents depth, freedom, and imagination; silver symbolises strength, clarity, and focus.
Simple gestures in an accumulation can add up to something much more substantial. This is a reminder to keep pushing forward, slow progress is still progress. The process driven nature of my work has allowed me to break free from the mental chatter of the mind. Likewise, the repetitive presence in these paintings opens a space for stilling the mind.
“Creativity can be defined as an original act of imagination that brings something into existence. It is a desire and innate drive to make new connections between things, to give form, and to transform.” -Shaun McNiff

Within One Thousand Pushed Pins into Wall, I attempt to fill a studio wall with one thousand push pins. My arms reach determines the height of the installation and the direction and amount of push is reliant on my body’s position and strength. Movements within the body like moments in life can never be replicated precisely, this is a reminder to remain present and embrace each moment.

By blurring the boundaries between art and artist, art and life, Billy Apple® continually asks the question: Where does art stop and life begin?
This work is showcasing an obstacle I am facing in life, my dominant hand’s wrist and arm sprain. The video demonstrates the struggle working with my left hand and also the determination to keep making art.
I was inspired by the late conceptual artist John Baldisseri, who made a work repeatedly writing “I will not make any more bad art.”
